We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Toronto Co-op Co-ordinator.

The Toronto Co-op Co-ordinator manages an assigned geographic territory in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), conducting approximately 350 to 450 in-person visits annually to develop, co-ordinate and monitor career-related work opportunities for co-op students. Reporting to the Associate Director, Co-operative Education & External Relations, the Toronto Co-op Co-ordinator will work from a Toronto home-based office.

As the central liaison between co-op students, employers and the Laurier community, the Toronto Co-op Co-ordinator ensures the success of the program and the satisfaction of all parties.

The Toronto Co-op Co-ordinator serves employers by responding to their recruiting needs, co-ordinating the hiring process, and procuring their satisfaction with students hired during work terms. Accountable for contributing to the education, career planning and personal growth of Laurier students, the Co-ordinator interviews and selects students for admission to co-op, prepares them for their job search and employment, and helps them resolve issues in the work place.

While Toronto Co-op Co-ordinators work autonomously to manage their assigned territory, they also work in conjunction with Waterloo campus based Co-ordinators and other co-op staff to provide overall services to students, employers and the Laurier Community.


Organizational Structure

The Department of Co-operative Education is responsible for the Co-op Option at Laurier which is available in arts, science, business and economics at the Waterloo campus and BTM at the Brantford campus, and currently involves the employment of students in more than 1,700 work terms annually.

This position is one of four external GTA based Co-ordinators reporting directly to the Associate Director, Co-operative Education & External Relations.

Accountabilities :
    1. Work independently to develop appropriate co-op work term positions and meet the departmental goal of 100% employment each term.
      • Prepare a marketing plan to promote the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, Arts and Science students which includes researching, defining and developing labour market opportunities within an assigned territory
      • Conduct in-person marketing visits, telemarketing, email and direct mail campaigns with potential employers across all levels of the organization, including senior executives, line managers, and human resources representatives. Approximately 80 to 100 in-person marketing visits and follow-up employer meetings are conducted annually, depending on the size of the territory and other program responsibilities
      • Prepare appropriate presentations for employers
      • Build effective relationships with new and current employer clients through personal, proactive and responsive service to develop opportunities in the areas of: management accounting, finance, chartered accounting, operations, marketing, HR, business technology management and for all arts/science disciplines.
      • Coordinate the hiring process by encouraging employers to interview on campus and provide assistance and support to them before, during and after interviews, including off campus interview days for Toronto employers each term. Assist with and attend employer information sessions
      • Ensure ethical recruiting practices are followed
      • Co-ordinate employment offers
      • Advise employers on recruiting strategies and guidelines, including salaries, as well as academic programs, including multiple options within business, double degrees, arts, science and graduate co-op programs
      • Ensure accuracy of employer database
    1. Contribute to the educational, professional and personal growth of participating students by helping them explore career options, develop job search skills, secure rewarding work term opportunities and gain marketable employment skills.
      • Interview and select students for admission to co-op in those programs where enrollment is limited and admission is competitive
      • Guide and support newly admitted students one-on-one and in sessions throughout each of two terms. Prepare and present workshop on introduction to co-op for assigned group, respond to questions and provide feedback, ensuring their understanding of the co-op process and requirements
      • Prepare students for the work term by participating in the design and implementation of a mandatory co-op preparatory course which covers topics such as resume and cover letter writing, job search methods, interview preparation, career opportunities through a co-op speakers’ series, report writing, social adjustment and appropriate work habits
      • Advise students on the development of learning objectives for their work terms and assess their initial written submissions. Review progress in meeting objectives with both students and their employers at the work term visit, and in student work reports and their final self-evaluation at back-to-campus meetings
      • Advise students on job search strategies and industry-specific careers information through individual appointments
      • Review resumes and cover letters prior to each work term
      • Review and evaluate student work term reports.
    1. Monitor the quality of positions, student performance during work terms and satisfaction levels of stakeholders.
      • Assist employers in developing job descriptions and approving them prior to posting (approximately 80 to 160+ postings in each of three terms annually)
      • Schedule and conduct work term visits with 250 to 375 individual students and their managers annually, to monitor quality of positions and satisfaction of both parties
      • Provide mediation and guidance to students and employers during the work term, including availability after hours to resolve issues such as performance problems, inappropriate job responsibilities, and interpersonal conflicts which can result in highly charged, emotional situations
      • Investigate terminations and provide students with guidance about the appeal process when their status in co-op is reviewed
      • Ensure employers complete evaluations and that they discuss them with students; review evaluations with students upon their return to campus
      • Obtain final evaluation of co-op positions from students at back-to-campus meetings and conduct follow-up with employers as appropriate
    1. Promote and provide information about Laurier Co-op.
      • Establish and maintain linkages with assigned professional associations for networking and professional development; organizations may include Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario, Insurance Institute of Canada, Supply Chain and Logistics Canada, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and various boards of trade.
      • Provide information and guidance to faculty, high school students, and parents at events such as the Ontario University Fair; communicate and meet individually with students and their parents
    1. Manage individual projects to support the department.
      • Assist in the development of policies and procedures to facilitate the effectiveness of the Co-op Office
      • Automate office systems
      • Administer employment contracts between the University and designated employers
Qualifications :
    • Minimum undergraduate degree plus two (2) years related experience in job development, employment advising, and sales/marketing
    • Awareness of current employment market conditions and job search techniques
    • Knowledge of Laurier’s Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, Arts & Science programs, and Brantford’s BTM program
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skill
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to focus on multiple prioritie
    • Able to work autonomously from a home office to manage an assigned territory
    • Flexibility and willingness to a) respond to students and employers after hours and b) travel extensively within a defined territory, and including extended overnight stays in Waterloo each term
    • Reliable vehicle
Grade : EX-H
Salary : $60,826 – 76,032
